Why You’re Still Tired: The Hidden Energy Leaks Draining Your Health
Why fatigue often improves when you remove hidden stressors instead of adding more supplements.
Most people trying to improve their health are adding things.
Supplements. Protocols. New routines. Another test. Another expert.
But after more than two decades working with patients, I have noticed something surprising.
Many people are not missing something.
They are leaking energy.
Until those leaks are addressed, the body rarely gets the chance to fully recover.
There is an old saying in the natural health world that I have always liked: headaches are not caused by an aspirin deficiency.
Most people laugh when they hear that. The idea that someone might say, “If only I hadn’t let my aspirin level get so low, I’d be feeling great today,” is obviously ridiculous.
It reminds me of the old joke about the patient who tells the doctor, “Doc, it hurts when I do this.”
And the doctor replies, “Then stop doing that.”
Simple advice. Not always easy to follow.
And yet when it comes to many health problems, we often behave as if the aspirin logic suddenly applies.
When something in the body feels off, it seems reasonable to assume we must be missing something. Maybe we need a new supplement, a better protocol, or a health hack we saw on YouTube or heard about on a podcast.
Before long, the plan for getting better becomes a growing list of things to try.
Sometimes those additions genuinely help. Nutritional deficiencies are real, and the right supplement at the right time can make a meaningful difference.
But after more than two decades working with patients, I have noticed something interesting.
Many people who are struggling with their health are not simply missing something.
Often they are doing quite a lot. They are trying multiple supplements, experimenting with diets, and following different protocols they have read about online. In many cases they are putting real effort into improving their health, yet they are not always sure what is actually helping.
At some point the supplement routine can start to resemble a small pharmaceutical distribution center.
There are pill organizers, supplement bottles covering the kitchen counter, and sometimes multiple phone alarms just to remember which things to take with food and which things to take on an empty stomach.
No one should have to live that way forever.
It is easy to assume the solution must be one more missing ingredient.
But sometimes the more useful question is different.
Instead of asking what the body might be missing, it can be more helpful to become curious about what might be quietly draining energy behind the scenes.
When the Problem Isn’t a Deficiency
I was reminded of this during my own mold recovery.
I had been making steady progress and was finally starting to feel like myself again. Then we moved into a brand new house. It was beautiful, clean, and freshly built.
Unfortunately, new construction often comes with its own chemical cocktail.
Even with multiple air purifiers running, windows open whenever possible, and ozone treatments in some rooms, my system struggled with the volatile organic compounds and other off-gassing chemicals in the home.
Within a few weeks I noticed something familiar creeping back in.
My fatigue returned, and my sleep became noticeably worse.
Part of the issue was light pollution. For the first two months we had not yet installed blackout honeycomb shades, and the extra light at night disrupted my sleep more than I realized.
At the same time we had just moved, which is inherently stressful, and my body was still sensitive from previous mold exposure.
Those layers added up quickly.
Within a few weeks I found myself needing midday naps again and feeling a level of fatigue I had not experienced for months.
It was a powerful reminder of something I often tell patients.
You cannot out-supplement toxic load.
If the body is constantly dealing with environmental stressors, it has to devote a tremendous amount of energy simply to coping with those exposures. That energy is no longer available for repair and recovery.
The challenge is that many of these stressors are not obvious.
They are often invisible. They can be hidden in the air we breathe, the buildings we live in, the water we drink, or the environments we spend our days in.
I am not saying this to scare anyone.
But it does require a new level of awareness and curiosity about the environments we live in and the exposures our bodies are managing every day.
The Unwellness Gap
Over the years I began noticing a pattern that I now think of as the Unwellness Gap.
These are people who are not acutely sick. Their lab work may even look fairly normal. Yet they do not feel well.
Energy is lower than it used to be. Sleep is inconsistent. Mental clarity comes and goes. Stress tolerance feels thinner.
Many people in this position are already doing a lot of things right. They may be eating better, exercising regularly, trying supplements, and reading everything they can find about improving their health.
Despite all of that effort, they never quite get their vitality back.
Often they are trying very hard to fix the body without realizing the body may still be dealing with something it cannot ignore.
In many cases they are chasing symptoms.
I hear clients say things like, “I have adrenal fatigue,” or “My thyroid must be off,” or “My hormones are out of balance.” They may even be taking supplements designed to support those systems.
And yet, despite doing all the right things, they still do not feel like themselves anymore.
When people find themselves here, the assumption is usually that they simply have not found the right solution yet.
They are missing the right diet, the right supplement, or the right protocol.
But sometimes the more useful question is not what am I missing.
The better question is this.
What might be quietly draining my system?
Energy Leaks
I often think of these hidden stressors as energy leaks.
The body has a limited amount of energy available each day. When the system is functioning well, that energy supports immune resilience, hormone balance, mental clarity, and repair.
But when hidden stressors constantly pull energy away, the body shifts priorities.
Instead of focusing on healing, the system begins focusing on survival and compensation.
People can remain in that state for years.
They are not acutely ill, but they are not thriving either.
They are simply spending most of their energy trying to keep the system stable.
Here is the line I often come back to when explaining this to patients.
You cannot out-supplement an energy leak.
Until the drain is addressed, the body keeps losing energy faster than it can rebuild it.
Progress Over Perfection
One thing I have learned through both clinical practice and my own health journey is that progress rarely comes from doing everything perfectly.
Even now, I still consider myself a wellness experimenter.
I test things. Some of them surprise me. Some of them are complete failures.
And occasionally I have to remind myself not to fall into the same trap many health conscious people do by trying too many things at once.
Progress usually happens when we start simplifying.
Reducing unnecessary stressors. Improving sleep. Cleaning up environmental exposures. Supporting the nervous system so it can shift out of constant fight or flight mode.
These changes may look small from the outside.
But they can free up enormous amounts of energy inside the system.
A Question for You
After more than twenty years working with patients, one pattern continues to appear.
When people identify and begin addressing the biggest drains on their system, their health often begins to improve in ways they did not expect.
So I am curious.
Where do you suspect your biggest energy leak might be right now?
Is it sleep, stress, environmental exposures, or something else entirely?
I would love to hear what you are noticing.
The Takeaway
The body is remarkably intelligent.
What we often interpret as dysfunction is sometimes the body doing exactly what it was designed to do when it encounters too much stress or interference.
When people go down the rabbit hole of Western medicine, they often see doctor after doctor searching for an explanation. They may receive several different labels for their symptoms, yet no one seems to fully understand what is actually driving the problem.
But the body rarely does anything by accident.
When fatigue, inflammation, or nervous system overload appear, the body is usually responding to something.
The challenge is that we are not always hearing the message clearly yet.
Sometimes the real stressor has not been identified.
Sometimes the environment has not changed.
Sometimes the body is still working overtime to manage hidden stressors that have not yet been addressed.
Our job is not simply to silence the alarm with more supplements or hacks.
Our job is to figure out what the alarm is trying to tell us.
Because the body is designed to heal.
Sometimes it simply needs fewer things draining its energy.
The body was never broken.
It was trying to get your attention.
