A Week Stimulating My Vagus Nerve with a homemade tVNS — And Why You’ve Gotta Try This
It's like a massage for my brain. Here’s what happened and how it layers into any healing program or protocol. It may also be the missing link for those labeled "too sensitive".
Quick note before we dive in:
There are a lot of new readers have landed here recently, and you might not even remember subscribing. So — welcome. I’m Robin. I’m an acupuncturist with 26+ years of clinical experience, and I write about the layers of healing most protocols miss — the nervous system, emotional, and spiritual patterns that keep smart, motivated people stuck around 85% better.
I’m also a recovering mold illness patient (5 years in, 85–90% better), a constant experimenter, and a wellness tools nerd. I try things in my own body and with my clients, and I share what actually works ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — and what gets a 👎 thumbs down. Sleep has been my biggest holdout this last year, which is part of why this experiment caught my attention.
If you’ve ever felt like you’ve done all the things — the supplements, the cleanses, the workouts, the diets — and you’re still not all the way back to yourself, you’re in the right place.
If You Missed the Series, Start Here
Over the last few weeks I’ve been writing about what to look at when your healing feels stuck. Not more protocols. Different layers.
The spiritual layer. The quiet beliefs about deserving, earning, and being worthy of healing.
The emotional layer. Symptoms as messages, not punishment.
The nervous system layer. Paid subscribers get my Safety Signal Stack — the tools I use to actively calm a dysregulated nervous system, especially when you “feel fine” but have every sign of being stuck in overdrive.
The DIY Vagus Nerve Stimulator setup that does what the $800–$1500 devices do, for under $50.
They build on each other. If you’ve missed any, this is your invitation to circle back.
The Throughline: Stop Adding. Start Looking Underneath.
When healing plateaus, the answer usually isn’t another supplement or another therapy. It’s looking at the patterns and beliefs running underneath — and the state of the nervous system carrying it all.
You can take every supplement on the shelf, but if your nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight, your body isn’t going to detox, digest, or repair the way it’s built to.
That’s why I’ve been so curious about tVNS.
A Quick Translation: What Is tVNS?
tVNS stands for transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation. In plain English: you’re using a small electrical current, delivered through a clip on your ear, to gently stimulate the vagus nerve to help your body interface with your immune system and enter a state of rest and digest. It also helps helps to lower inflammation levels that are too high among other things.
No surgery. No implants. Just a clip on your ear. (Full DIY setup in last week’s article.)
Field Report: One Week of tVNS — Me and Three Clients
Here’s what happened when I started using it consistently, and what’s showing up in three of my clients.
My First Week of Vagus Nerve Stim: Deeper Sleep
Deep, unprompted calm in the middle of the day. Warm hands and feet. And the sleep difference is the part that surprised me most.
I’ve been working on my sleep all year and thought I was in a good place. Turns out it wasn’t as good as I thought. I’m falling asleep before I can finish a page of my book. And I’m waking up genuinely rested — which, after a year of sleep being my stickiest symptom, is no small thing.
Why this happens: Vagal stimulation helps your brain drop into deeper sleep, where your body actually does its repair work. So I’m not just sleeping longer. I’m sleeping better.
The faster sleep onset tells me something too. My baseline stress response was higher than I realized. Not insomnia, just enough background hum to keep me awake an extra few minutes. tVNS quieted it.
A Quick Aside
This is the part that gets me about working on the nervous system. You don’t always know how revved up you are until you’re not.
Most of us have been running at a low simmer for so long, we think it’s normal. Then something turns the heat down, and we go — oh. So this is what calm feels like in my body.
Client #1: Digestion That Finally Settled
She’s already on a clean diet. Within a week of using tVNS, her bloating eased, she’s having regular daily BMs without supplements, and her stomach feels flatter.
Why: The vagus nerve runs straight through your gut. When it’s underactive, things slow down, motility gets sluggish, and gas gets trapped. Bloating is often a movement problem, not a food problem. When the vagus comes back online, the gut’s natural rhythm does too.
The fact that she responded this quickly tells me her digestive issues were being driven by her nervous system — which is actually the most responsive kind to fix.
Client #2: Workday Anxiety That Lifted
He does 30 minutes of tVNS after work. Warm hands and feet during the session. Better sleep. And at work — which used to spike his anxiety — he’s feeling grounded, even in the fast-paced moments.
Why: “Grounded” is the word people consistently use when tVNS works. Not euphoric. Not numb. Just safe in their own body.
His anxiety had a strong physical driver — racing heart, tight chest, shallow breath — and his brain was interpreting those sensations as anxiety. tVNS interrupted the loop at the body level, and the mental piece quieted with it. The calm is also carrying into his workday now, which means his baseline is actually shifting — not just his post-session state.
Client #3: When It Doesn’t Land (Yet)
She tried it on and off, didn’t notice much, and stopped. Tried again. Same result.
This is honest data. Not every tool is for every body, and the standard protocol doesn’t land for everyone. A few things worth tweaking before giving up:
Time of day. For some nervous systems — especially with a trauma history — using it before bed can feel activating, not calming. Try morning or midday.
Intensity. Some people need it more noticeable. Others need it lower than they think.
Settings. What works for me may not work for her. There’s a range to play with.
It might not be the nervous system. If sleep is being disrupted by blood sugar, hormones, sleep apnea, or pain — tVNS will help around the edges but won’t fix the root.
Three nights isn’t always enough. Some people need two to three weeks of consistent use before they notice a shift.
She’s game to keep experimenting. I share her case because dialing in the settings is part of the work, not a sign the tool is broken.
How This Fits Into Any Healing Program
The nervous system is the soil. Everything else — the supplements, the detox, the mindset work, the spiritual practice — grows in it. If the soil is locked in survival mode, nothing roots.
This is why I keep coming back to it. Not because tVNS is magic. Because most people are trying to heal in a body that doesn’t yet feel safe.

Want personalized help figuring out what your body is actually asking for?
In a Clarity Session, we step back and look at the full picture — your symptoms, history, patterns, and environment — through clinical experience, intuitive medicine, and a deeper pattern-recognition lens.
We work at your body’s pace, not the pace a protocol says you “should” move. That means looking at timing, what your system can realistically tolerate, what needs to happen first before adding more, and how to support healing while still living real life.
No forcing. No overwhelming your nervous system in the name of “doing it right.”
Even one session can help you get unstuck and finally understand what your body has been trying to tell you.
